"BRAINSTORMING WORKSHOP ON STRENGTHENING REGIONAL CAPABILITY FOR EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES IN AGRICULTURE AND ALLIED SECTORS HELD AT ICAR-CRIDA"


A two-day brainstorming workshop on ‘Strengthening regional capability for effective utilization of meteorological services in agriculture and allied sectors’, jointly organized by the Association of Agrometeorologists, Anand and ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad, was held at ICAR-CRIDA during 31 May – 01 Jun 2024. Around 40 experts from ICAR, SAUs, IMD, IITM, NCMRWF, ICRISAT, innovative farmers, Agri-startups etc. attended the workshop.

Dr S.K. Chaudhari, DDG (NRM), was the chief guest explained the importance of weather forecasts in preparing Agromet Advisory Services. He says ICAR- NRM division supports the endeavor.

Dr R.C. Agrawal, DDG (Education) was the guest of honour and expressed his support towards implementing the Agricultural Meteorology syllabus suggested by the experts.

Dr V.K. Singh, Director of ICAR-CRIDA informed the house about how important the weather information to the farmer for making field-level decisions. Dr K.K. Singh, President of the Association of Agrometeorologists stated that Agromet database management and Automation of Agromet bulletins must be on top priority. He sincerely thanked all the delegates for supporting the Agromet cause and on behalf of AAM.

The workshop started with a technical session consisting of presentations by scientists from IMD, NCMRWF, IITM and PJTSAU regarding the current status and prospects of seasonal, medium, short-range, and extended-range weather forecasts and agromet advisory services. The farmers also shared their feedback regarding agromet advisory services – the benefits they received and the improvement required.

It was followed by sub-theme meetings, viz., seasonal and extended-range weather forecast, medium-range weather forecast, and short-range weather forecast. In-depth discussions were held in each session and recommendations were made. The major recommendations emanated from the respective working group meetings were vetted on day 2 of the workshop regarding the importance and ease of implementation. The workshop's output was a set of recommendations, that focused on improving the application of seasonal, extended, medium, and short-range weather forecasts in agriculture and allied sectors.
