The Horti-Pasture Cropping System was established on an area of 1.5 acres at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ranga Reddy district, under the guidance of ICAR - Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), Hyderabad. The planting was carried out on 4th July 2025 by Dr. V.K. Singh, Director of ICAR-CRIDA.
This system integrates fruit trees with pasture crops to enhance productivity and sustainability in dryland farming. The fruit crops planted include Jamun (Syzygium cumini) with a spacing of 8 m × 8 m, using the Bahudoli variety, which has a pre-bearing period of approximately 48 months. Mulberry (Morus spp.) was also planted at a spacing of 8 m × 8 m, with the Agate variety, which begins bearing fruit in 9 to 12 months. Lime (Citrus aurantifolia), variety Balaji, was spaced similarly and has a pre-bearing period of 24 to 26 months. Another key inclusion is Laxmanphal (Annona muricata), commonly known as Soursop, which also follows 8 m × 8 m spacing and takes about 24 to 26 months to bear fruit.
To complement the system with a forage component, Hedge Lucerne (Desmanthus virgatus) was planted at a spacing of 30 cm × 10 cm, using the Vellimasala variety, which reaches harvest maturity in just 6 months. This integrated approach not only provides diversified farm income but also improves soil health and fodder availability.
