Brain Storming Workshop on Carbon Trading in Agriculture Organized


Brain Storming Workshop on Carbon Trading in Agriculture was held at NASC, New Delhi on 16th January, 2024. Dr SK Chaudhari, DDG (NRM), ICAR welcomed the participants and emphasized the agenda points for discussion. Dr VK Singh, Director, CRIDA set the context for the workshop through his presentation which was followed by briefing from Sh. Franklin L. Khobung on carbon trading initiatives by MoA & FW. The importance of agroforestry and horticulture in carbon sequestration, challenges in monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon credits and the role of ICAR in this endeavour was discussed in detail. Dr Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & DG, ICAR in his concluding remarks emphasized the need for addressing the major challenges in carbon trading and set the roadmap for ICAR to develop appropriate methodologies and take forward the carbon trading initiatives in consultation with the stakeholders. The meeting ended with vote of thanks by Dr Rajbir Singh, ADG (AAF & CC), ICA


The workshop was Chaired by Dr Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & DG, ICAR and Co-chaired by Dr SK Chaudhari, DDG (NRM), ICAR. Dr BS Dwivedi, Member ASRB, Dr JK Jena, DDG (FS & AS), Sh. Franklin L. Khobung, Joint Secretary (NRM/RFS), Takayuki Hagiwara, Country Representative (FAO), ADGs and other senior officers from ICAR attended the workshop. A total of 56 participants including representatives from MoEF & CC, MoRD & PR, Ministry of Power, CIMMYT, IIED and private sector viz., KHEYTI, VERRA, TNC, Varaha Climate Ag Pvt. Ltd., Carbon Market Association of India, WayCool Foods and Koshier Climate participated in the workshop and contributed to the deliberations.
